Additionally, since we are part of the larger national Sunrise Movement, we have a large role to play in electoral politics and electing Green New Deal champions across the country. We also hope to continue to push for sustainable initiatives by the university, whether that be expanding our composting, recycling or implementing green infrastructure. As a result, the RSC publishes consistently biased research supporting deregulation that the Trump EPA often cites when rolling back environmental policies.Īside from the RSC, we plan to organize alongside other social justice organizations fighting for an equitable campus, whether that be through amplifying the voices of BIPOC students or supporting our campus workers. The Center claims to be an unbiased research institute focused on improving regulatory policy, however, a 2019 report by Public Citizen instead revealed that the RSC had received over one million dollars from Exxon Mobil and the Koch Network: the very same people profit the most from deregulation of the fossil fuel industry. For those who aren’t aware, the RSC is an academic research center housed by the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. Q: What are some of your goals for this semester or this school year?Ī: Our most urgent goal is to have GW close or cut ties with the Regulatory Studies Center (RSC) or publicly disclose its funding, motivations, and anti-regulation agenda. Our GW hub was founded in order to carry on the role and legacy of Fossil Free GW, an organization committed to immediate fossil fuel divestment by the university, a campaign which had been going on for about seven years prior to the creation of Sunrise GW.

We plan to make climate change an urgent priority across the United States, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people. Sunrise will help us get there.Ī: Sunrise GW is a chapter of the Sunrise Movement, a youth movement to stop climate change and create millions of jobs in the process through a Green New Deal. No matter what corner of the globe we find ourselves in now, the climate crisis is real and it demands big structural change. We owe it to each other and our planet to join the fight in creating a sustainable and viable future. As Victoria mentions, there’s a job for everyone on the Sunrise team. Let me emphasize that again: you should join. Here’s our Q and A: consider it at the very least an elevator pitch as to why you should join Sunrise. To learn more about what Sunrise GW is and where it’s going, I reached out to a co-coordinator of the hub on campus, Victoria Freire. Protests outside of President LeBlanc’s house, the famous yellow-tape divestment dummy in Kogan, passing a historic referendum on fossil fuel divestment in the 2020 SA elections, and educating others on the Green New Deal and its ever-growing importance are just some of the things that Sunrise has accomplished in its short time since its founding in fall 2019. Sunrise has been at the forefront of every demand for real, impactful change at GW, inspiring countless students along the way.

I’m sure most, if not all, of you, know Sunrise GW. Being together in our nation’s capital makes the GW experience what it is, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a student here it’s that our passion and our drive to make the world around us a better place know no limits.
